Tropico 7 – Special Edition Announced for Nintendo Switch 2, Launching January 2027

El Presidente is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, and apparently not even the limitations of hardware are going to stand between him and absolute power, with Kalypso Media, Gaming Minds Studios and Engine Software teaming up to bring Tropico 7 – Special Edition to Nintendo’s latest console on January 28th, 2027.

Even more importantly for fans of the series, this will mark the first global simultaneous launch of a Tropico game across all platforms, meaning aspiring dictators everywhere will be able to step into the shoes of El Presidente at the same time, whether they are looking to build a thriving island paradise or, depending on their preferred style of leadership, make a few questionable presidential decisions along the way. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has been specifically optimised for the handheld platform, giving players the chance to take their island empire with them wherever they go, because apparently running a nation is a never-ending responsibility that cannot simply be put aside when you leave the sofa. Across five campaign maps, players will need to balance production, politics, economics and the happiness of their citizens while attempting to keep their increasingly complicated island empire under control. One of the more interesting additions for Nintendo Switch 2 is the support for mouse controls using Joy-Con 2 controllers, which should give players more precise control when constructing and managing their islands, while GameChat will allow friends to communicate through voice chat or share their screen as they attempt to build their own tropical utopias.

Of course, Tropico 7 is bringing more than just a new platform to the series, with several new ways for El Presidente to reshape both the island and the political landscape. The revamped Council will bring faction leaders directly into the halls of power, where players can negotiate with them, manipulate them, or simply do what El Presidente apparently does best and ignore them completely. Then there is Terraforming, which gives players greater control over the actual shape of their islands, allowing them to raise land, redirect rivers, create new parks and even create entirely new islands. Players can also customise their islands and use synergy effects to create happier environments and push citizen satisfaction to new heights, while El Presidente and his palace can both receive their own visual customisation options.

Tropico 7 – Special Edition is currently in development and will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28th, 2027.
