8 Games on Switch to Scratch That Baldur’s Gate 3 Itch

Baldur’s Gate 3 dropped on PS5 this week, will be coming to Xbox series consoles in the near future, and is shaping up to be considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Unfortunately for Switch Owners, Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be on the handheld console, which is a real shame. While some of us have multiple platforms and a chance to play Baldur’s Gate 3, for those who don’t, I thought I would put together a list of Dungeons and Dragons-based games available right now that you can play to scratch that Baldur’s Gate 3 itch.

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition is where it all began, despite having aged a fair bit, it’s still an in-depth RPG with plenty of story and things to do. This was THE GAME to play when it came to Dungeons and Dragons-style adventures back in the day. On the Switch, it’s been enhanced to look sharper, and have some quality-of-life improvements, but may not appeal to newcomers who are chasing a more 3D experience. It is a part of the Dungeons and Dragons pack which is currently on sale though, and well worth the asking price!

Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition

Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition includes all expansions for the original Baldur’s Gate 2 as well as similar features to the previous game on this list. It too has aged, but for those looking for another lengthy adventure in the Forgotten Realms, you can’t go wrong! Baldur’s Gate 2 sees you start as a captor and make your way in the world as one of 15 different characters, each with their own stories and aspirations. Both BG1 and BG2 are available to purchase together or in the Dungeons and Dragons Bundle which is currently on sale.

Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition

A 3D entry in the classic Enhanced Editions of the D&D Second Edition series. Neverwinter Nights allows you to play as multiple characters, explore cities, and delve into dungeons as you unravel a story of mystery and intrigue. The controls and gameplay have had modern enhancements and despite its age, it is a more friendly entry on this list into the world of the Forgotten Realms. Completing this game will easily take you over 100 hours on top of the 2 expansions that are included.

Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition

Icewind Dale, much like Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, is an isometric view D&D game set in the frozen north of the Forgotten Realms. It’s not as heavy on story (although it’s still a great one) and focuses more on combat. It features all expansions as well and there’s plenty of meat on the bones of this great adventure.

Planescape Torment

This was the first D&D-based game I ever played. Set across only a few dozen screens, Planescape Torment is an intriguing story following “The Nameless One” as you try to uncover your own identity and unravel the mysteries of the world. While it may not sound like much, its incredibly polished writing, lovable characters, and intricate systems make it an essential game to put on your list if you’re chasing that Baldur’s Gate 3 high.

For the King

For The King is a rogue-like D&D adventure where everything depends on your dice roll. Don’t let the art style put you off, there’s a lot of depth in here to give you plenty of reasons to dive back in for another run, especially since you unlock new features and items with every play-through. In For The King, you will face gelatinous cubes, use dice rolls to overcome traps and unlock artifacts to help power up your character. Despite not being too in-depth with speechcraft options, it’s frequently on sale on the E-shop and is well worth a purchase.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium seems like a very weird game off the bat, but those who look past that will delve into a dystopian world with a dark and often humourous story. The majority of your actions are determined via a dice roll. At the surface level, it’s a quirky story about a detective who is a bit of a clown, but as you go deeper, you are enthralled by a murder that evolves into a conspiracy, as well as the personal struggle of your character as he battles alcoholism and self-destructive drug use. The adult themes and nature of the game earn it an R18 rating, so this is one for adults only.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2, is the closest you will get to Baldur’s Gate 3 on your Switch. I have sunk an offensive amount of time in this wonderful game and it’s one of those games in my mind, would be close to a perfect 100. The game seamlessly switches between characters’ voice lines and a narrator which makes you feel like you are absorbed in an incredible D&D Campaign. The story is immersive, and the clever environment design means you can use wits as well as magic to defeat your enemies. Things like electrifying blood on the ground to shock opponents, using speech to avoid battle altogether, or setting up clever ambushes present you with almost infinite options for how you can play. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the pinnacle of D&D-type games on Nintendo Switch, and if you don’t own it already, I suggest you pick it up and prepare to lose 100+ hours of your life to it.
