Final Fantasy VII Revelation Announced for Switch 2, Launching Spring 2027

Square Enix has officially unveiled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the third and final chapter in its ambitious Final Fantasy VII remake project, announcing it during Summer Game Fest Live. The game is set to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in Spring 2027. Director Naoki Hamaguchi joined Matt Mercer, the English voice of Vincent Valentine, to debut the game’s first reveal trailer and offer an extended look at gameplay. For longtime fans, Final Fantasy VII Revelation represents the culmination of a journey that began nearly three decades ago. For newer players like myself, the announcement is especially exciting as I have only experienced Final Fantasy VII Remake earlier this year when it arrived on Switch 2, and I’m currently working my way through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for review, so seeing the final chapter already on the horizon makes it feel like the perfect time to be discovering this legendary RPG series.

The reveal trailer shows Cloud and his companions facing their greatest challenge yet. With the planet on the brink of destruction, Sephiroth drawing closer to godhood, and Meteor threatening all life, the party takes to the skies aboard the iconic Highwind airship in a desperate race to save the world. One of the biggest additions is the ability to freely explore the entire planet using the Highwind. Players can travel anywhere from the airship and parachute directly to locations below, creating seamless transitions between aerial exploration and adventures on the ground. As enormous Weapons emerge and chaos spreads across the world, players will decide where to go, who to help, and which battles to tackle first.

Combat continues the remake project’s hybrid approach, blending real-time action with Tactical Mode. Square Enix says the system has been expanded further with new playable characters and powerful abilities as the series reaches its conclusion. The newly released screenshots also give Switch 2 owners an early glimpse at what to expect, showcasing everything from large-scale battles and cinematic story moments to the vast environments players will be able to explore aboard the Highwind.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase reflected on the significance of reaching the trilogy’s finale:

“FINAL FANTASY VII, first released in 1997, has been beloved by fans for many years and has since become a “legend” in its own right. The FINAL FANTASY VII remake project that began in 2020 with everyone’s passionate support is finally reaching its climactic finale with FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION. The story’s final destination represents my emotions spanning thirty years working on this title; and yet, as the developer, our hands alone cannot turn its final page. It’s only when you, the player, step inside and memorialise this journey that a new “legend” is finally born. We hope you witness the coming together of our hearts, and yours.”

Director Naoki Hamaguchi added:

“I’m beyond excited to announce FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, launching simultaneously across all platforms in Spring 2027. I’m truly grateful to our fans who believed in this story and supported us for so many years. In this title, centred around “resolve,” Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet’s fate. All the stories and emotions accumulated over the years will culminate in the most satisfying way with this experience, brought to you as the series’ final chapter. Please look forward to it.”

Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura also shared his thoughts on bringing the wider Final Fantasy VII universe together:

“As creators, we have carefully built and nurtured the FINAL FANTASY VII series over many years, expanding it through numerous spin-off titles along the way. Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these FINAL FANTASY VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the remake project. While there may be a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we are confident that this journey will remain an unforgettable experience for years to come. Thank you sincerely for joining us and being part of this journey over so many years.”

With a simultaneous launch across all major platforms, Final Fantasy VII Revelation looks set to deliver one of gaming’s biggest releases when it arrives in Spring 2027, and for players who have followed Cloud’s story since 1997, it marks the end of a long road. For those of us who only recently boarded the train, there’s still plenty of time to catch up before the journey reaches its final destination next year.
