Final Fantasy XIV Online Coming to Switch 2
After months of teasing from Naoki Yoshida, it has finally been confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, with a release window set for August. This reveal has been a long time coming. Yoshi-P has been dropping hints for a while now, and it always felt like a matter of when, not if. Seeing it finally become real is a big moment for fans of the game and the platform itself. Bringing a game like Final Fantasy XIV to a Nintendo system is no small task. This is a full-scale MMO with years of content behind it, and the development team has made it clear that optimisation is their top priority. Right now, the game is targeting a 30 frames per second experience on Switch 2. That might not sound flashy on paper, but for a game of this size and complexity, it is a realistic and welcome target.
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to subscriptions. The good news is that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to play, which removes one potential barrier straight away. However, things get a bit more complicated if you are already subscribed to another platform. Existing players can add a Switch subscription at a 50 per cent discount on top of their current one. It does mean paying for two active subscriptions if you want to play across platforms. Otherwise, new players or those switching over will just pay the standard subscription pricing.
Alongside the Switch 2 announcement, a brand new expansion called Evercold has also been revealed. Details are still light at this stage, but the timing suggests that Switch 2 players will have plenty of fresh content to jump into when the game arrives.
Final Fantasy XIV is one of my favourite off-platform games. It is the one I go back to when I need a break from everything else. Sometimes that means heading out on a quiet fishing trip, other times it is just spending hours crafting in Limsa Lominsa. The idea of doing all of that on Switch 2 is really exciting, but that said, there is no way I am paying for two subscriptions. When this launches, I will be dropping my Xbox sub and making the move over to Switch 2 as my main platform.
August is shaping up to be a huge month for both Final Fantasy XIV and Nintendo Switch 2. Between the base game and the new Evercold expansion, there is a lot to look forward to. The real question now is how it feels in the hands, and whether the Switch 2 version can hold up during the game’s busiest moments.
