How to Beat Hell House – Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Boss Guide
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is finally on the Switch 2, and for the most part, it’s been smooth sailing. But much like living in 2026, who would have thought the housing crisis would become the roadblock that stops you in your tracks? The Hell House is easily one of the most challenging and frustrating bosses in the entire game. It’s a fight that can feel overwhelming, unfair, and downright exhausting the first time you hit it. Thankfully, this guide is here to help. It assumes you haven’t gone out of your way to hunt down hidden gear or complete optional challenges to unlock powerful summons, so… let’s get through this together.
Battle Preparation
Before anything else, make sure your weapons are upgraded as much as possible. Magic damage and HP should be the priority here, as this fight is all about getting the most out of both Aerith and Cloud. Aerith is the real star of the show, since melee damage is largely ineffective against Hell House for most of the battle. Before entering the arena, take advantage of the backstage rest area and vending machine. Stock up on Hi-Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Downs, prioritising Phoenix Downs first, then potions, and finally Ethers if you have the gil to spare. Hell House has several heavy-hitting attacks that are difficult to avoid, and there are moments where you can get juggled for over 1,000 HP in seconds. Fainting is almost inevitable, so being prepared is key.
Materia setup is critical. Equip as much elemental materia as you can, as this guide focuses on a double spell-casting approach to exploit Hell House’s elemental weaknesses. Ideally, between Cloud and Aerith, you want access to Ice, Fire, Wind, and Lightning. If your materia options are limited, doubling up on Ice and Fire will still work just fine. You will also be able to summon during the fight, so equip Ifrit if he’s your only option. Finally, make sure Aerith has Revive materia equipped. This will save you Phoenix Downs and keep the fight from spiralling out of control when things inevitably go wrong.
Phase 1
Phase 1 is relatively quick and straightforward. During this phase, Hell House is weak to Ice attacks. The fight starts with AOE fire attacks, which can quickly become a nuisance, as well as leaping strikes that deal decent damage. Hell House will also throw flaming chairs at you. You can avoid these by running around the coliseum, or if your health pool allows, you can block and absorb the damage.
Focus on building Aerith’s ATB gauge early. Her Arcane Ward ability lets spells be cast twice, giving you early damage and helping build stagger. Assign whichever character has Ice materia equipped to Arcane Ward and repeatedly cast Blizzard on Hell House. This will deal significant damage and can stagger the boss, paving the way for Phase 2. If Hell House is staggered but the cutscene hasn’t triggered yet, have Cloud perform melee attacks while Aerith uses Soul Drain to restore MP. This ensures you’re ready for the more aggressive second phase. Keep casting Blizzard in the Arcane Ward to trigger the cutscene and move to phase 2.
Phase 2
Phase 2 ramps up the difficulty. Hell House now sprouts a head and arms, introducing new attacks that will keep you on your toes. It starts with Rocket Charge, where Hell House rushes at you. You can easily avoid this by moving out of the way. Then there’s Jetstream, a spinning AOE fire attack that requires careful positioning to dodge. One of the most dangerous mechanics in this phase is Devour. Hell House can swallow a character and deal damage over time. When this happens, you can switch to your other character and deal enough damage to spit them out, or simply drop a potion to keep them alive while they’re trapped.
Hell House will also switch between elemental phases, so you need to pay attention. Attack with the right element, or risk healing the boss instead. The elemental counters are:
Red (Fire): Use Blizzard
Green (Wind): Use Lightning
Yellow (Lightning): Use Wind (Aerith’s default Tempest works here)
Blue (Ice): Use Fire
At times, Hell House will jump out of the arena to launch flaming chairs. This is a perfect opportunity to switch to Cloud and block the attacks, which will quickly fill his ATB gauge. If Arcane Ward has expired, use this moment for Aerith to refresh it and heal. Casting Cure during Arcane Ward allows two spells to go off, quickly restoring your health pools. After the chair barrage, Hell House jumps back into the arena, and this is where most players end up fainting. Stay on the outer edge of the coliseum to avoid the worst of the damage. If you have a Limit Break ready, this is an ideal time to use it, especially Aerith’s mass heal. Keep Phoenix Downs or Revive Materia handy to bring fallen characters back quickly. One critical tip: don’t cast a Phoenix Down immediately after a teammate falls as Hell House reenters the arena, because it often follows up with a Jetstream flame attack that can instantly knock them down again. Keep your distance, wait for the attack, then revive and heal, using ethers to build up your mana pool.
Phase 3
Despite being the final phase, this is probably the halfway point of the fight in terms of intensity, and it’s demanding. The strategy remains largely the same: cast Arcane Ward with Aerith and continuously lob spells from the circle, while avoiding the massive ramp-up in Hell House’s attacks. Balancing offence and defence is your biggest challenge here. Save Ethers for Cloud’s offensive spells, and use Aerith’s Soul Drain to restore MP if needed.
Hell House now introduces a new elemental attack called Housing Shock. It swings its arms wildly before delivering a devastating blow that can wipe out a huge chunk of health. Your best bet is to outrun and evade it, or heal immediately after getting back on your feet. The boss will also perform both an Ice and Fire chair salvo. You can block with Cloud to build ATB or evade with Aerith, and meanwhile, keep launching projectiles at it to chip away at its health.
Finally, there’s the Heavensward attack, which can end the fight quickly if you’re unprepared. Hell House flies around the coliseum, launching flaming chairs at you. Make sure your health pools are above half before standing in the Arcane Ward circle to cast Ice attacks. If you manage to land a few, it will stumble and fall into the arena. If not, it will target a party member and do a Hellborn attack, crashing down on them. Evade if possible, counter with a Limit Break if you have one, or prepare to heal up immediately. If a party member falls, step back, let the follow-up attack finish, then revive and heal as quickly as possible.
This is the core loop of the fight. Keep HP and MP topped up, cast spells from the Arcane Ward circles, and hit Hell House with devastating ice attacks whenever it flies around the arena. Mastering this rhythm is the key to victory.
You did it! While this fight can feel frustrating and even unfair at times, the sense of satisfaction when Hell House finally goes down makes it all worth it. Now you can continue your amazing journey through Midgar with confidence. Enjoy the adventure!
