How to Defeat Phenoros – Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Things are really heating up in Metroid Prime 4, and you’ve finally made it to the big boss of the Flare Pool. Phenoros is a giant Eel-like creature with a temper hotter than the lava it lives in, and this time, we are going to have a few phases to fight in order to cool it off. Want to defeat Phenoros in the Flare Pool? Here’s how to do it.
For the first phase, you’re going to be hovering around on the Vi-O-La while Phenoos swims around, agitating lava flares that can damage you. Dodge the flares and hold A to lock onto the weak spots on its belly as they appear above the lava. Timing is everything here, because once the spots go under the surface, your attacks won’t affect them. Patience is the key, and I found getting up close and personal really helped me chip away at this phase.
Once you hit all its spots, the fight will enter phase 2.
This is where things can go pear-shaped really fast, so you will need to be Johnny on the spot with your dodging and counters. Phenoros will appear with 4 blue spots on its face. We need to start popping them. With each pop, Phenoros will reveal its tongue, which you need to shoot. I found the Ice beam to be the most effective weapon to shoot its mouth with, and just use your standard arm cannon for the weak spots on its face.
Phenoros will employ some moves that do some real damage, and this fight can end really quickly if you don’t know how to counter them.
The first move to avoid will be a sweeping fire breath. To dodge this, go into the morph ball to roll under it, avoiding big damage numbers.
The second move will be a front-facing bite. This requires a last-minute dodge to get out of the way. If Phenoros gets you, smash that A button to escape to minimise damage.
The 3rd move set will see Phenoros launch lava balls at you. Shoot these to replenish your elemental shots, rockets, and health.
The final move will be a front-on fire blast, which is tricky to dodge. Do your best to side-step it at the last minute.
After you have chipped Phenoros’ health down, it will move to phase 3, which will see 4 more weak spots appear on its frill like a cobra. The weak spots can shoot blue projectiles, which you can avoid by strafing them. Chip away at the weak spots, using the Ice shot on its tongue, and Pheneros will eventually collapse into the lava. We aren’t done yet, though!
To finish Phenoros off, you will need to switch to your psychic visor and use a guided beam to navigate through its open mouth and hit a weak spot deep within Phenoros’ core. Once you hit it, you will defeat Phenoros and unlock the physic grapple for some high-flying fun.
