Phil Collins once told us in a catchy song that you can’t hurry love. But in Tomodachi Life, you can certainly influence it, and take a few steps to help trigger the proposal mini game. Now, I painfully waited 14 days trying to get two Miis over the line, both stuck on that “wanting to marry” stage, only to realise there are actually a few things you can do to nudge them towards popping the big question. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at how you can get your Miis to marry in Tomodachi Life, and start living the dream.

Relationship Building and Dates
Miis need to progress through friendships through regular interactions in order to start forming stronger bonds. If you want the relationship to move as quickly as possible, make sure they’re interacting often, and you can help things along by placing them in the restaurant together, sending them to spend time in shared spaces, and generally keeping them in each other’s orbit as much as possible. It’s also important to let events and interactions fully finish before trying to trigger another one. Interrupting or rushing between events can actually slow progression down. At some point, one of your Miis may develop a crush before the other feels the same way. That’s completely normal. If this happens, you can encourage a confession of love, which will trigger the “sweethearts” stage if successful.
The relationship generally follows this progression: strangers → friends → sweethearts → marriage, with each stage building naturally over time. The key milestone to watch for is when the relationship status turns pink. This indicates they are emotionally ready for a proposal to potentially occur. It’s also worth noting that relationships can fluctuate. Miis who are deeply in love or already sweethearts can still drop back from the “wants to marry” stage. That doesn’t mean things have failed, simply, you may need to wait for the right conditions to line up again before the proposal triggers.
Dates in Tomodachi Life are one of the main ways Miis strengthen their relationships and move closer to becoming sweethearts. Once two Miis start spending time together on dates, you’ll usually see their bond increase more quickly, especially if the outing goes well. There isn’t a strict “correct” date path, but there are a few common spots and activities that tend to come up regularly, and each one gives Miis a chance to interact in different ways. Mii’s may also ask to move in with each other before getting married, and cooking together in the kitchen and hanging out also build relationships.
How to Trigger a Proposal
Here’s where many players tend to get stuck in Tomodachi Life. The transition from “wants to marry” to an actual proposal can feel inconsistent, and it often seems like nothing is happening for days at a time.
In my case, I accidentally stumbled across a method by mistake. I didn’t have stairs set up for my miis beach level building, which ended up accidentally trapping my Miis at home. With nowhere to go, I picked up and placed them in their rooms for some thinking time, and that’s when things changed almost instantly, and a pink speech bubble appeared. This happened with my main couple while they were at the “wants to propose” stage, and I’ve since seen it work again with a second couple who had been sweethearts for a much shorter period of time. In both cases, the key moment was placing them into their rooms while they were already at the “wants to marry” stage.
From there, the proposal sequence begins. You’ll be taken into a marriage proposal mini game, which must be successfully completed three times during the attempt in order to trigger the engagement. It can feel a bit tense, but it’s straightforward once you get the timing down. If successful, the proposal leads directly into marriage. The Miis will immediately hold a wedding ceremony, followed by a honeymoon shortly after. It all happens quite quickly once the final step is triggered. There is also one last surprise that unlocks after certain requirements are met with a married couple on your island. I won’t spoil that here, but it’s worth discovering for yourself once you reach that stage.
