I have vivid memories of Killer Instinct on the SNES, the intense combo system, the amazing art, and the phenomenal soundtrack seared into my brain. But when it comes to Killer Instinct Gold on the N64? That part is lost in my memories. I know Orchid was still my go-to fighter, and I definitely remember that incredible soundtrack pulsing through it all, and I know it tested several friendships but that’s about it.
Thankfully, Killer Instinct Gold is back and playable right now thanks to a surprise drop on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service!
Released in 1996, Gold was a console adaptation of Killer Instinct 2, built specifically for the Nintendo 64. While it didn’t quite shake the industry like the original, it was a technical showcase at the time, bringing fast, fluid 3D backgrounds and a surprisingly deep combo system to a brand-new generation of hardware. Reception was mixed back then, with praise for its visuals and music (that soundtrack – Kirkhope and Beanland), but criticism around how it compared to its arcade roots.
This new release marks the first time Killer Instinct Gold has been officially re-released in decades, making it a fascinating time capsule for fighting game fans, and a great excuse to rediscover a piece of Rare’s legacy. If you’ve got an Expansion Pack subscription, you can download it today and jump in.
Did you play Gold back in the day, or is this your first combo breaker? Let me know!
