Kingdom Hearts IV is coming to Switch 2 in late 2027
I’ll admit something right off the bat: I’ve somehow managed to completely miss the Kingdom Hearts series over the years. Despite the franchise celebrating 25 years, I’ve never actually played one of the games. So, when KINGDOM HEARTS IV arrives, this will be my first proper introduction to the series. And now we know when that introduction will happen.
During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026, SQUARE ENIX and Disney & Pixar Games announced that KINGDOM HEARTS IV will launch in late 2027, with a new trailer shown during the Disney Entertainment Showcase. The trailer also gave us a look at a brand-new world inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Coco, giving fans another glimpse at the worlds Sora will be visiting in the next chapter of the series. KINGDOM HEARTS IV once again follows Sora, who finds himself in the mysterious city of Quadratum, where dark creatures known as the Heartless are causing trouble. From there, Sora will journey through a variety of worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar, meeting new characters and discovering new powers along the way. And yes, some very familiar faces are coming along for the ride.
Donald Duck and Goofy are back, while the new trailer also revealed that players will be able to take control of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as they attempt to uncover what happened to Sora and track down his whereabouts. There was plenty more Kingdom Hearts news at D23 too. A special panel titled DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS celebrated the franchise’s 25th anniversary, looking back at how the series brought together Disney, Pixar and SQUARE ENIX, with appearances and insights from members of the creative team and voice cast. The panel was also livestreamed around the world and included an extended version of the KINGDOM HEARTS IV trailer.
But that’s not all. Disney and SQUARE ENIX also announced that an original anime series simply titled Kingdom Hearts (working title) is currently in development for Disney Channel and Disney+, in collaboration with Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at SQUARE ENIX. As for KINGDOM HEARTS IV, it will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in late 2027, and is available to wishlist now. So, as someone who has somehow avoided the series for 25 years, I guess I’ve got plenty of catching up to do before 2027.
