Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Announced!

After weeks of leaks, rumours, and certain accessory makers being swiftly visited by Nintendo Lawyers, The Nintendo Switch successor has been revealed, called the Nintendo Switch 2.

Gamers were treated to a reveal video that showcased some new features of the new hardware in a 2-minute video, with a confirmation for more details in a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd. Here are the first major details on the hardware…

Backwards compatibility

Nintendo has revealed more about backward compatibility and stated that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be fully supported or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.” This could refer to certain rumoured features like 4K upscaling or even online features. As the hardware uses the same cartridge system, I doubt that some Switch 1 games would be incompatible with the new hardware backward compatibility, which is confirmed for both digital and physical games on the new system.

Size Difference & Joycons

The Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a larger screen and joycons that appear to be magnetically attached. The Switch 2 Joycons can detach and be used as a mouse, meaning there may be plenty of control options for gamers moving forward. The Joycons nestle into place which is a better design choice as I know many gamers have Joycons the slide up on the Switch 1 after plenty of years of play.

Mario Kart 9

Mario Kart 9 makes its first appearance in the trailer and looks great in action. Donkey Kong looks closer to his movie counterpart and it’s not apparent what the new iteration twist will be. I’m sure we will see more of Mario Kart in the Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd.

Nintendo Direct

A Nintendo Direct covering the hardware was announced for April 2nd, and Nintendo is also offering gamers a chance to register for a hands-on experience in Melbourne (as well as other major cities globally)
