The Team at No Man’s Sky have done it again, with an incredible update in the form of Remnant. With a new update comes a new expedition, and I’m here to guide you through it in the most efficient way possible. As always, I’ve made mistakes so you don’t have to, and we don’t have time or a long-winded intro, so let’s dive into Expedition 21: Remnant.
Before we begin, you can lower difficulties on many things to make your time a bit easier with this expedition. You aren’t penalized and if you’re in a hurry, this might be a good way to save some time. Head to the Anomaly, log into the Expedition terminal, and let’s initialise Remnant.
First, you want to head over to the crane machine in the scrapper base and interact with the console. This will give you the plans for the Gravatino Coil, and tick off the Wasteland milestone at the same time! Installing the Gravatino Coil is simple; you will need a Gravatino Ball, Chromatic Metal, and Magnetic Resonators. Thankfully, all of these materials can be found nearby. Use your visor to scan for Cobalt to harvest and refine, and refine Ferrite into Magnetised Ferrite to craft Magnetic Resonators. Use your terrain manipulator to harvest Emeril and refine that for Chromatic Metal, and grab a Gravatino ball off the ground nearby. As you’re doing this, scan the local wildlife as you see them. There’s one sky creature, and the rest are all around the base to achieve the “Safari” Milestone. Install your Magnetic Coil and tick off the “Magnetic Personality” Objective. Upload these discoveries through the discovery tab on the pause menu to tick off the “Field Guide” milestone while you’re at it! Along your travels, be sure to scan any minerals you come across to complete the “Petrology” Milestone. A couple of these minerals will be found underground, a couple in the standard biome, and 3 found in the blue scars on the planet.
It’s time to get scrappin’!
First, you have to test your gear. So follow the instructions on screen to repel, pick up, and recycle some scrap metal lying around the base. This will unlock the “Flux Calibration” objective. Things will really pick up from here (pun intended) as we now have to craft a Colossus Geobay. You should already have the Ion Batteries from another reward, so craft 5 metal plates using Ferrite Dust, and use your terrain manipulator to harvest Pyrite to refine into Parrafinium by combining Pyrite and Ferrite Dust. Craft your Collosus bay and modify the vehicle setup with a flatbed, which can be found under “Chassis” then select Option 2 to check off the “Utility Vehicle” Milestone! Now, using the same terminal, save your configuration for the “Auto Mechanics” Milestone. This will reward you with plans for an excavation blade. Install it by crafting metal plates and carbon nanotubes to complete the “Big Dig Rig” milestone.
Time to put it to use, go find some waste, you’ll need 3 pieces, and load them onto the flatbed, transport them back to the waste plant, and park the truck where the crane is. Use the terminal to auto-collect your haul and mark off the “Tipper” Milestone. Now, we need to head to Waypoint 1. Install your pre-packaged radar amplifier in your suit inventory. Press down on the D-pad while in your Collosus and select Exocraft Radar, then scan for waste heaps. Your checkpoint will become visible, so it’s time to head there. Feel free to destroy any hazardous flora you see by running over them, as eliminating 20 will give you the “Weeds In The Tyres” milestone. Reaching the first waypoint will also complete the “Checkpoint 1” objective! The next objective required you to load 5 special waste items and transport them back to the processing facility, but I recommend loading as much as you can, as you may lose some on the return trip. Carefully make the return trip. Note: This has to be processed manually! Don’t use the crane terminal; instead, manually sort the items into their respective processing units.
Phase 1 is now complete!
Throughout this expedition, you will eventually tick off “Defying Gravity” for manipulating 64 objects while handling scrap. You may also hit 8 creatures in your Collosus which ticks off the “Roadkill” objective. You will also smash 500 objects with your bulldozer blade while traversing this planet, which will eventually complete the “Lay Waste” Milestone.
To complete Phase 2, if the previous objectives have completed throughout your travels, you simply have to head to waypoint 2 and then recycle some materials from there. Select the objective, scan using your radar, and prepare for a bit of a hike. Collect all the special waste you can and head back to the processing facility. Once there, recycle everything manually to complete the “Road Trip 2” Milesotne.
Phase 2 is now complete!
Using the new plans from the road trip 2 award, craft a Cyclops scope. This one is fairly straightforward, using materials you will most likely have in your inventory already. Install the scope to complete the “Motor Optics” milestone. We have to complete the “Minecart” milestone, which requires using the laser on your colossus to harvest materials. I recommend finding patches of Dihydrogen crystals and smashing them to quickly tick it off. This will give you plans for a new radar, and thankfully, it’s relatively easy to build in terms of materials. Install it and press down and search for Alien structures. Reach the monolith to complete the “Sandstone” milestone. We have to chart 6 courses. This is done by activating the save beacons outside of structures. You most likely be able to complete this goal naturally, as most scrap heaps have a beacon, but if you’re missing 1 or 2, use your Colossus radar to find a trade outpost and head there. If you see any structures on the way, be sure to check them for the save beacons. Around this time in the expedition, you should also complete the “Mileage” milestone for travelling 50,000 units. Head to the 3rd Waypoint and complete the “Checkpoint 3” Milestone. You know the drill: load up the hazardous waste and get ready to haul it back to the depot. Activate the save beacon before you leave and get hauling! Manually sort the materials, and we will head into phase 4. Just remember, Phase 3 won’t be completed until we hit 6 of those save beacons, so find them at every place you visit!
Onto Phase 4!
Phase 4 is going to start out combat-heavy. We need to defeat 8 sentinels, and we also need to steal gravitino balls. Thankfully, the second you touch one of these balls, sentinels will attack you. Grab the gravatino balls, shoot some sentinels, rinse and repeat. Now, during combat, grab some sentinels with the gravatino tool to reorient them forcefully by grabbing them and repelling them. You will need to do this 32 times. I recommend grabbing the balls, defeating the sentinels, then selecting this objective and fighting more sentinels so you can keep track of the milestone. The milestone won’t tick over until you are out of combat, so escape by digging a foxhole underground and wait out the patrol to complete the “Reorientation Programme” milestone. Once we have got our fighting out of the way, use your radar to find and navigate to Checkpoint 4. Once you get there, you will tick off the “Checkpoint IV” milestone. Load up your rig, hit that save beacon, and head back to the depot.
Once at the depot, recycle your materials and “Road Trip IV” should complete Phase 4!
Phase 5
This Phase finishes really quickly! We just have to head ot Checkpoint 5, grab the cargo, and recycle it as it should complete “Toxicity”, “Irradiated Cargo”, and ” Volatile Payload” all in the final recycle. Select the checkpoint 5 milestone, use your radar, and scan for waste heaps. Once you reach it, you will get the “Checkpoint V” milestone checked off. Load up your vehicle and prepare for one last run back to the depot. Don’t forget to hit that save beacon! Sort your cargo and process it. This will tick off the “Road Trip V” If you didn’t check off the specific waste milestones, we need to find another waste heap. Scan, rinse and repeat, and while you’re there, hit that save beacon if you haven’t already!
Phase 5, and Expedition 21 are now complete!
Your spaceship will now be able to be summoned, head into space, and summon the Anomaly to hand in the expedition! Completing this expedition gives you a bunch of great items alongside the heirloom armour set. What did you think of this expedition? In my opinion, this has been the most fun I’ve had with No Man’s Sky in ages. I’m really loving the Remnants update!
