Oblivion Remastered: Knights of the Nine Walkthrough – Pilgrimage & Full Quest Guide

Knights of the Nine is an expansion included with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and it offers some incredible Crusader armour that can level with you, provided you know how to obtain and upgrade it. I’ve put together this guide to help you obtain all of the Crusader Relics, defeat Umaril the Unfeathered, and solve some of the trickier puzzles you’ll encounter along the way. Now, this isn’t a play-by-play walkthrough of every dungeon. Most of the dungeons in Knights of the Nine are fairly linear, so there’s little point in telling you to turn left, then right, then walk down a corridor. Instead, this guide focuses on the important stuff: where to go, how to find each relic, and, most importantly, how to solve the puzzles that can leave you scratching your head. So, without further ado, let’s get some armour.

How to Start Knights of the Nine

You can start Knights of the Nine really early in Oblivion Remastered, as there’s no level requirement to begin the questline. To get started, travel to Anvil and make your way towards the castle gate. You’ll find a Prophet standing outside. Speak with him and ask him about the events surrounding the chapel. Eventually, he’ll ask you who you are to undertake the pilgrimage. When given the choice, select: “I am no one of note.” This will begin the Pilgrimage quest, sending you across Cyrodiil to pray at the shrines of the Nine Divines. With the pilgrimage underway, it’s time to track down each shrine and complete the first step on your journey to becoming a Knight of the Nine.

Pilgrimage – All Wayshrine Locations

Pilgrimage – All Wayshrine Locations

Pilgrimage is, in my opinion, the hardest part of the entire Knights of the Nine questline. There are no quest markers showing you exactly where the Wayshrines are, and they’re scattered all across Cyrodiil. Thankfully, quite a few of them are relatively close to fast-travel points. I’ve laid out the route below in an order that should minimise unnecessary travelling and, most importantly, give you clear directions to each shrine.

1. Wayshrine of Mara

Start by leaving Anvil through the main gate and head northwest. You’ll eventually need to leave the main path and continue across the terrain. This will lead you to the Wayshrine of Mara. Pray at the shrine, then turn around and head back towards the main road leading out of Anvil.

2. Wayshrine of Arkay

Follow the main road until you reach a small stone fence. Be careful here: if this is your first time travelling through the area, there will be a bandit waiting nearby. Go through the gate in the stone fence and continue until you reach Lord Drad’s Estate. From the estate, head directly east. This will take you to the Wayshrine of Arkay. Pray at the shrine before continuing.

3. Wayshrine of Zenithar

From the Wayshrine of Arkay, head directly south towards Brina Cross Inn. Once you reach the inn, pick up the main road towards Kvatch. Continue along the road until you reach Gottshaw Inn. At Gottshaw Inn, leave the road and head directly east across the terrain. This will lead you to the Wayshrine of Zenithar. Pray at the shrine before moving on.

4. Wayshrine of Akatosh

From the Wayshrine of Zenithar, head southwest for roughly 300 metres. You should soon come across the Wayshrine of Akatosh. Pray at the shrine.

5. Wayshrine of Talos

Now it’s time to make use of fast travel. Fast travel to the camp at Kvatch, then follow the main road towards Skingrad. After riding for a while, you’ll come across a stone bridge. Be careful here, as bandits will be guarding the bridge. Deal with them, then head due north from the bridge. Continue north until you reach the Wayshrine of Talos. Pray at the shrine.

6. Wayshrine of Kynareth

Fast travel to the Skingrad East Gate. Leave Skingrad and head east. Continue in this direction until you reach the Wayshrine of Kynareth. Pray at the shrine.

7. Wayshrine of Julianos

Fast travel to the Chestnut Handy Stables, just outside the Imperial City. From the stables, head north. You don’t have to travel far. Just down the hill beside the stables, you’ll find the Wayshrine of Julianos. Pray at the shrine.

8. Wayshrine of Dibella

Now head towards Weye, just outside the Imperial City, over the bridge from the Chestnut Handy Stables. Follow the path south alongside the river. Continue along the path, and you’ll eventually reach the Wayshrine of Dibella. Pray at the shrine.

9. Wayshrine of Stendarr

For the final shrine, fast travel back to where it all began: the Imperial City Sewers. From the sewer entrance, head south and slightly east. Continue in this direction until you find the final shrine, the Wayshrine of Stendarr. Pray at the shrine, and you’ll have completed the pilgrimage. With all nine Wayshrines visited, you’ve taken the first major step towards becoming a Knight of the Nine. Now it’s time to find out what the Divines have in store for you.

The Shrine of the Crusader

Once you’ve completed the pilgrimage, you’ll witness a vision that sends you on your next task: retrieving the Helm of the Crusader from the Shrine of the Crusader. Thankfully, you won’t have to travel far, as the shrine is located relatively close to where you completed the pilgrimage.

Finding the Helm

The dungeon itself is fairly straightforward, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble making your way through it. When you first enter, defeat the skeletons in the opening area. You’ll soon come across a room containing an altar. Look towards the back of the room, and you’ll find a glowing button on the wall. Press it to open the door and continue deeper into the dungeon. Follow the dungeon until you eventually reach the skeleton of Sir Amiel. Search his remains and make sure you take:

Sir Amiel’s Journal
Sir Amiel’s Key
Sir Amiel’s Ring

Once you’ve looted Sir Amiel, look above the area where his skeleton is located. You’ll see the Helm of the Crusader sitting on a ledge. There’s a little shortcut here if you’re feeling cheeky: you can simply jump up onto the ledge and grab the helm. Alternatively, continue following the dungeon’s intended route, which will eventually bring you up to the same area. Grab the Helm of the Crusader and make your way back out of the dungeon. With the first piece of Crusader equipment in your possession, it’s time to begin rebuilding the Knights of the Nine.

Priory of the Nine

With the Helm of the Crusader in your possession, it’s time to find the Priory of the Nine and begin rebuilding the order.

Finding the Priory

The Priory is located between Skingrad and Bravil, so the easiest way to reach it is to fast travel to either city and make your way through the forest towards the quest waypoint. Once you arrive, enter the main Priory building. For now, ignore the chapel and head into the lodgings. Walk around the corner and you’ll find a strange symbol associated with the Knights of the Nine. Activate the symbol using Sir Amiel’s Ring, which you picked up from his skeleton earlier. This will open the way down into the cellar. Make your way through the cellar and head towards the back. You’ll find another room that leads deeper into the Priory. Continue through it, and you’ll eventually be challenged by the Knights of the Nine. Despite being ghostly enemies, you don’t need to worry about having Silver Weapons or enchanted/magical weapons to damage them. Simply fight your way through the knights one at a time. Once you’ve defeated them all, you’ll receive the Cuirass of the Crusader.

Learning About the Remaining Relics

After the fight, speak with each of the knights. They’ll provide information about the remaining Crusader Relics, giving you clues about where you need to go next. At this point, you have some freedom over which relic you pursue first. However, to keep things simple and minimise unnecessary travelling, we’re going to go after the Boots of the Crusader next. So, with the Priory reclaimed and the Cuirass secured, it’s time to undertake Kynareth’s trial.

Nature’s Fury

To begin, fast travel to the Wawnet Inn, just outside the Imperial City, and follow the quest marker to the Shrine of Kynareth. Speak with the Priest of Kynareth, who will explain the trial you must complete to prove yourself worthy of the next Crusader relic.

Kynareth’s Trial

This is one of the easier relics to obtain, as the trial doesn’t require you to defeat anything. Head into the Grove, where a grizzly bear will eventually appear. Here’s the important part: DO NOT attack the bear. Instead, simply block its attacks and allow the bear to attack you. Keep blocking and don’t fight back. After you’ve successfully endured the bear’s attacks, it will eventually leave the grove. Once the bear has gone, a cave entrance will be revealed. Head inside the newly opened cave and follow the short path through the area. At the end, you’ll find the Boots of the Crusader. Take them, and you’ve completed Kynareth’s trial. With the Boots secured, we can move on to the next Crusader relic.

Stendarr’s Mercy

For the next Crusader Relic, we’re heading to the Chapel of Stendarr in Chorrol. Once you arrive, speak with the priest to learn about Kellen, one of Sir Casimir’s descendants. Kellen has been afflicted with a terrible curse, and you’ll soon discover that helping him is the key to claiming the next relic. Head downstairs into the chapel and speak with Kellen, he’ll explain what has happened to him and tell you about the curse that has plagued him. Once you’ve spoken with Kellen, return upstairs and speak with the priest. He’ll explain that there is a way to help Kellen. You can return downstairs and speak with Kellen again if you want to follow the dialogue through, or head to the central altar in the chapel and pray. You’ll be granted the Lay Hands ability. Equip Lay Hands, then head back downstairs and use the ability on Kellen. By doing this, you’ll take Kellen’s curse onto yourself, but in return you’ll finally be able to claim the next Crusader Relic. You should now be able to equip the Gauntlets of the Crusader.

How to Cure the Curse of the Consumed in Oblivion Remastered

If you’ve just taken Kellen’s curse and are wondering how to get rid of it, don’t panic. The Curse of the Consumed cannot be cured through normal means. Potions, spells and other conventional methods won’t remove the curse. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to live with it for a while. The good news is that the curse is eventually removed as part of the Knights of the Nine storyline, so you don’t need to worry about being stuck with it permanently. We’ll cover exactly how to remove the Curse of the Consumed later in the guide when we reach the Blessing of Talos. For now, you’ve got the Gauntlets of the Crusader. Time to continue your quest to recover the remaining relics.

The Path of the Righteous

For the next Crusader Relic, head to Leyawiin and enter the Chapel of Zenithar. Once inside, speak with the Crusader who wants to join you, then talk to the priest to learn more about the path ahead.

Finding the Mace of the Crusader

Head down into the undercroft beneath the chapel. You’ll encounter several ghosts as you make your way through the area, but don’t worry about them. They won’t harm you, so you can simply ignore them and continue towards the back of the undercroft. Eventually, you’ll reach the Tomb of Saint Kaladas. Before interacting with the tomb, make sure you have the Boots of the Crusader equipped. Interact with the tomb and, if you’re wearing the boots, the path to the next relic will be revealed. Follow the newly revealed path towards the Mace of the Crusader. Simply pick up the mace and the relic is yours. As you leave the Chapel of Zenithar, you’ll be ambushed by attackers. Deal with the enemies and make sure the area is safe before continuing

Wisdom of the Ages

Wisdom of the Ages is one of the longer quests in the Knights of the Nine questline, so make sure you’ve got some time to set aside before heading to Fort Bulwark. The closest fast-travel location is Leyawiin, so fast-travel there and make your way to the fort.

The First Pressure Plate Puzzle

Once inside Fort Bulwark, fight your way through the fort until you reach the first pressure plate puzzle. There are several plates to choose from, but thankfully you don’t need to figure this one out yourself. The correct route is:

Left → Centre → Right → Left

Follow that sequence, and you’ll be able to continue deeper into the fort. Keep fighting your way through the fort until you eventually reach a large room containing four statues, with a much larger statue overlooking them.

The Four Statues Puzzle

This puzzle requires you to rotate the four smaller statues so that they’re all facing the symbol on the floor in the centre of the room. Each statue can be rotated using the levers at its base. The frustrating part is that the statues don’t all rotate by the same amount, so you’ll need to keep using the levers and checking their positions. Take your time and adjust each statue until all four are facing the central symbol. You’ll know you’ve solved the puzzle when the fires go out, and a secret door opens on the side of the room.

The Rodgar’s Chest Puzzle

This is where things get considerably more frustrating if you don’t know the solution. You’ll enter a room containing a pressure plate, several chests and statues around the outside. The basic idea is a memory game. Stand on the pressure plate and loot the chest to receive one of Rodgar’s items. At the same time, one of the statues around the outside of the room will display an item. You need to remember which statue corresponds to which item, then place the item into the correct chest.

How to solve the puzzle

Rather than trying to memorise everything yourself, use the solutions below as you work through the puzzle:

Stand on the pressure plate.
Loot the chest to obtain one of Rodgar’s items.
Look at the statues around the room to identify the item being displayed.
Place your item into the corresponding chest.
Repeat the process for the remaining items.

Once you’ve correctly placed the items, the puzzle will be solved, and a new door will open. Head through the newly opened passage and continue through the fort until you reach the end of the quest. There you’ll find the Shield of the Crusader. Take the shield, and you’ve completed Wisdom of the Ages. With the Shield secured, we’re one step closer to completing the full set of Crusader Relics

The Faithful Squire

Head back to the Priory of the Nine, and you’ll meet Sir Roderick’s squire. Speak with him, and he’ll tell you about his fallen master. He’ll also hand over the next piece of the Crusader’s equipment, the Greaves of the Crusader. The squire will then ask you to help recover the Sword of the Crusader and avenge his fallen master. You can choose to have the squire accompany you as a follower for the journey if you’d like, although you don’t have to take him with you. With the Greaves secured, it’s time to track down the final Crusader relic: the Sword of the Crusader.

The Sword of the Crusader

We’ve reached the final Crusader Relic, and thankfully, this one is relatively straightforward.

Underpall Cave

Head to Underpall Cave, with Bruma being the closest fast-travel point. Make your way through the cave, fighting your way deeper into the dungeon. There’s nothing particularly complicated here, so simply follow the path until you encounter Lord Berich Vlindrel. Defeat Lord Berich and he’ll drop the Defiled Sword of the Crusader. But there’s one problem: the sword has been corrupted, and we need to cleanse it before it can be used.

Cleansing the Sword

Take the Defiled Sword to the Chapel of Cheydinhal. As soon as you enter the chapel, you’ll once again be attacked by Aurorans. Defeat the attackers, then make your way to the central altar. Activate the altar to have it blessed and cleansed. The sword will be restored to its proper form. With the final Crusader Relic recovered, we’re finally ready to take the fight to Umaril. But before we do, there’s one rather important problem we need to deal with first: our Fatigue burden.

The Blessing of Talos

With all of the Crusader Relics recovered, it’s finally time to deal with the Curse of the Consumed. Return to the Priory of the Nine and enter the chapel. The Prophet who set you on this journey will now be waiting inside. Speak with him to receive your final blessing. The Blessing of Talos will immediately remove the Curse of the Consumed, meaning your Fatigue will no longer be drained. But that’s not the only reason this blessing is important, because you’ll also gain the ability to cast the Blessing of Talos, which is required during the final battle with Umaril the Unfeathered. You’ll need this ability to defeat Umaril when he enters his spirit form. With the curse finally lifted, and all of the Crusader Relics assembled, you’re ready for the final battle.

Umaril the Unfeathered

The final battle is upon us! With all of the Crusader Relics recovered and the Blessing of Talos in your possession, it’s finally time to take the fight to Umaril the Unfeathered.

Assault on Umaril’s Fortress

Fast travel to Anvil and follow the quest marker to the meeting point. Your fellow Knights will be assembled outside, ready to join you for the final assault. Enter the dungeon and prepare for a lot of fighting. For the most part, the path through the fortress is fairly straightforward, so fight your way through the Aurorans and continue deeper into the stronghold.

The Never-Ending Enemies

Eventually, you’ll enter a room where the enemies seem to keep coming back to life after you’ve defeated them. Don’t waste your time repeatedly fighting them. Instead, quickly make your way up the stairs and look for a glowing gem. Interact with the gem to destroy it, which will instantly defeat the enemies in the room and allow you to continue. Keep pushing forward until you reach Umaril.

Umaril – Physical Form

You’ll now face Umaril in his physical form. Don’t underestimate him… he can pack a serious punch. You’ll want to bring him down as quickly as possible while keeping an eye on your health. Use your strongest attacks and make use of the Crusader Relics you’ve spent the entire questline collecting. Once you’ve defeated Umaril, don’t put your weapons away just yet.

Umaril – Spirit Form

After defeating Umaril’s physical form, equip the Blessing of Talos that you received earlier. Cast the blessing to follow Umaril into his spirit form. You’ll now face him for the final time. Defeat Umaril’s spirit and you’ll have finally completed the main Knights of the Nine questline. Once the battle is over, you’ll awaken back at the Priory of the Nine, where the questline’s epilogue will play out. Knights of the Nine is complete; enjoy this moment, Crusader. You’ve earned it. While the Knights of the Nine may have come to an end, your adventure through Oblivion Remastered is only just beginning.
